Disability motoring UK Sled Testing

The petition that disabled motoring UK are promoting is essentially about the human right to awareness of health and safety of wheelchair accessible vehicles. Currently disabled individuals cannot ascertain comprehensive information pertaining to whether a particular model of wheelchair accessible vehicle has been sled tested also known as crash tested for disabled drivers or passengers.

A sled test is similar to the crash testing seen on TV - a dummy is strapped into a wheelchair within the car, which is then put through head-on collisions to check that both the belts and their fixings are strong enough to withstand a real-life accident and keep the wheelchair passenger secure.

The reason testing is so vital after conversion to a wheelchair accessible vehicle is because converting a car is a complex process involving significant structural changes to the vehicle such as lowering the floor. If this is not done properly, and by experts, the car may be unsafe.

It would seem that all vehicles whether they are intended for disabled drivers or non-disabled drivers should undergo necessary health and safety crash testing checks at a human right regardless of sexuality ethnicity and disability. If disabled motoring UK achieves 100,000 votes on their petition then steps can be put in place to ensure that all vehicles adapted for wheelchair users are subjected to vigorous health and safety sled testing procedures.

Driving is a key part of being independent therefore I sincerely hope that disabled individuals are not discouraged by the car manufacturers and adaptation companies avoiding health and safety procedures such as the sled testing.
